Industrial Electrician (Levels I–IV)
Role overview
We’re hiring Industrial Electricians at Levels I–IV for the Electrical Maintenance team. One posting covers all four levels; level and pay grade are set by experience and a hands-on skills assessment.
Electricians keep pipe-production equipment running safely, from 480 V three-phase power and motor controls to PLCs, AC drives and plant networks. The role grows from breakdown troubleshooting (Level I) to preventive maintenance and advanced PLC/drive work (Level II) to leading a maintenance crew (Levels III–IV).
Department: Electrical Maintenance (LDCP)
Reports to: General / Shift Supervisor, Electrical Maintenance
Classification: Hourly, non-exempt
Pay grade: Hourly Level 1–4, set by assessed level
Key responsibilities (all levels)
Every level owns safe, code-compliant electrical maintenance on the plant floor.
- Inspect electrical systems, equipment and components for hazards, defects and code compliance; adjust or repair as needed.
- Diagnose malfunctioning systems and components with test equipment and hand tools; find the cause of breakdowns and correct it.
- Test systems and circuit continuity with ohmmeters, voltmeters and other testing devices.
- Assemble, install, test and maintain wiring, equipment, apparatus and fixtures, including connections to circuit breakers and transformers.
- Read blueprints and electrical drawings, or prepare sketches, to locate wiring and equipment and confirm conformance to building and safety codes.
- Advise leads and management when continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
- Perform rigging and physically demanding work, such as digging trenches to lay conduit and moving heavy objects.
- Follow Job Safety Analysis (JSA), lockout/tagout (LOTO) and OSHA standards, working toward zero recordable injuries.
- Keep the plant clean and safe; work as part of a team of skilled trades workers.
Level progression
Candidates are placed at the highest level whose skills test they pass; Levels III and IV also need two years of pipe-mill or similar experience.
- Level I: Breakdown troubleshooting and repair on industrial equipment; works without supervision and meets the all-level requirements below.
- Level II: Preventive maintenance and advanced PLC, AC drive and motor troubleshooting; works without supervision and meets Level I requirements plus Level II skills.
- Level III: Crew lead; troubleshoots CNC, PLC, VFD, SCADA and plant-specific equipment; directly supervises a team of electricians. Must pass Level I, II and III skills tests and have at least two years at Welspun Pipes or a similar organization.
- Level IV: Senior lead at the top hourly grade, with Level III scope and the deepest experience; directly supervises a team of electricians. Must pass Level I, II and III skills tests and have at least two years at Welspun Pipes or a similar organization.
Requirements by level
All candidates need the Level I baseline; each higher level adds to it.
All levels (Level I baseline)
- Knowledge of 480 V / 3-phase systems and hands-on industrial troubleshooting experience.
- Basic understanding of PLCs, AC drives, NEC, conduit bending, motors and controls, hydraulics and pneumatics, digital and analog signals, and LOTO rules.
- Safe, proficient use of hand, power and precision measuring tools.
- Demonstrated ability to safely operate a forklift and high lift.
- Able to read, analyze and interpret electrical drawings and documentation.
- Applied math: fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions; fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
Level II (in addition)
- Read blueprints showing circuits, outlets, load centers, panel boards and other equipment; work to NEC and state and local building codes.
- Read and understand European electrical drawings.
- Troubleshoot various AC drives and PLCs, and electro-mechanical devices.
- Determine the cause of short circuits in control and power circuits, and of AC motor failures.
- Working knowledge of Profibus and Profinet networks.
- Wire 2-wire and 3-wire proximity sensors to a PLC or remote I/O.
Levels III and IV (in addition)
- Pass the Level I, II and III skills tests, with a minimum of 2 years at Welspun Pipes or a similar organization.
- Troubleshoot production equipment including CNC, PLC, VFD and SCADA systems.
- Troubleshoot plant-specific equipment:
- HFW pipe plant: high-frequency welder, seam-annealing induction unit, automation and electrical controls.
- Spiral pipe plant: ID/OD welders, production robots, automation and electrical controls.
- Coating plant: high-frequency induction units, coating process equipment, automation and electrical controls.
- Lead the team: plan and assign work, train and coach, appraise performance, and resolve issues in line with company policy and law.
- Execute the production plan, optimizing manpower, waste, productivity and production delays.
- Monitor use and inventory of spare parts and maintenance supplies.
Skills and competencies
Strong candidates pair mechanical aptitude with reliable, safety-first work habits.
- Mechanical knowledge; able to perform rigging and safety-related tasks.
- Self-starter who also follows direction; listens well and asks for clarification.
- Presents information clearly and answers questions from engineers, supervisors and co-workers.
- Applies written, oral and diagram instructions to problems with several concrete variables.
- Consistently at work and on time; uses equipment and materials properly.
- Treats others with respect regardless of status or position.
- Levels III–IV: process-engineering understanding and the ability to collaborate with and manage a team.
Physical demands and work environment
This is hands-on plant work in a loud, hot, cold, dirty and fast-paced environment.
- Work from ladders, scaffolds and roofs; stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lb.
- Vision: depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Exposure to wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- May work in dusty, hot or wet conditions, confined spaces or ditches.
- Risk of electrical shock, falls and cuts; strict safety procedures are required at all times.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions, provided they do not create an undue hardship to the company.
