Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced CNC / VMC Machine Shop Manager to lead our prototype development machining department. In this role, you will oversee the daily operations of vertical machining centers, manage a team of operators and programmers, and help ensure that high-precision prototype components are delivered on time and to technical specifications.

As a quick-turn prototype development environment, this role requires comfort with frequent setup changes, complex geometries, and adaptive problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and supervise the daily operations of the CNC / VMC machine shop floor.
• Oversee the scheduling, programming, setup, and operation of VMC machines to meet prototype development timelines.
• Review engineering drawings, 3D models, and CAD/CAM programs to support manufacturability and effective machining strategies.
• Guide and mentor operators and programmers on advanced programming, tooling selection, and fixturing methods.
• Troubleshoot machining issues, program errors, and tooling defects to minimise downtime.
• Maintain quality-control standards by ensuring prototype parts are inspected and meet tolerance requirements.
• Manage shop inventory, including cutting tools, raw materials, fixtures, and maintenance supplies.
• Implement and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for VMC machinery and auxiliary equipment.
• Promote a safe working environment through compliance with standard workshop safety regulations.
• Maintain ISO / AS documentation, including SOPs, control plans, and FAI reports.
• Prepare machining cost estimates.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Experience: 5–8 years of hands-on CNC / VMC machining experience, including 2–3 years in a supervisory or leadership role within a prototype development or tool-room environment.
• Technical expertise: Proficiency in CNC programming, including G-codes and M-codes, and experience with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam, Delcam/PowerMill, or SolidCAM.
• Drawings and metrology: Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T, and use precision measuring instruments such as CMMs, micrometers, and vernier calipers.
• Machine knowledge: Understanding of VMC machines; controllers such as Fanuc, Siemens, or Haas; cutting-tool selection; speeds and feeds; and work-holding setups for low-volume, high-mix production.
• Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or a related technical field. CNC programming certification is an asset.
• Professional skills: Leadership, communication, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage deadlines and changing priorities.
