Cath Lab Special Procedures Technologist

Assists credentialed providers with all diagnostic, interventional, and therapeutic procedures within the cardiac and vascular laboratory environments. Performs all duties in a manner that promotes teamwork and reflects KPNW mission and philosophy goals. Works under the direct supervision of a credentialed provider.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Monitors radiation safety and completes necessary administrative tasks for proper documentation and compliance.
  • Actively performs quality assurance functions for x-ray equipment and protective garments/accessories.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems and initiates vendor service calls.
  • Assists the hospital radiation safety officer with survey and compliance documentation for the CVLs.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with the use of IVUS, Site Rite, Atherectomy Devices, Pacemakers/ICDs, and Coronary Angiograms/Interventions.
• Serves as scrub, monitor/recorder, and x-ray technician for all CVL procedures as assigned by the Charge RN or management team.
  • Prepares and positions patients for invasive procedures.
  • Assists with cardiovascular tests and records patients' hemodynamic activity using specialized electronic test equipment, recording devices, and laboratory instruments.
  • Obtains hemostasis at arterial and venous access sites post-procedure, including removal of sheaths and safe management of hemostatic devices.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with PACS image retrieval for presentation during active cases.
  • Sets up, maintains, and troubleshoots all equipment used in procedures as required.
  • Recognizes cardiac arrhythmias and hemodynamic waveforms and alerts the credentialed provider and other team members during procedures according to protocol.
• Administers intra-coronary and/or intra-arterial medications under the direct supervision of a physician.
  • Prepares and maintains a sterile field using aseptic technique for testing procedures.
  • Supports the physician in the sterile field as a scrub by assisting, preparing, and maintaining the sterile field using aseptic technique for all CVL procedures as assigned by the Charge Nurse or management team.
  • Prepares, maintains, and operates hemodynamic and monitoring equipment.
  • Performs basic and advanced life support when required, including defibrillation.
  • Maintains proficiencies to perform point-of-care tests on lab equipment, such as activated clotting time (ACT), oxygen saturations, glucose testing, and arterial blood gases (ABG).
  • Performs patient teaching regarding procedures.
  • Restocks supplies, maintains a clean work area, and files documentation.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

• Experience: Minimum of twelve (12) continuous months of cardiac cath lab, EP, and/or special procedures work experience within the last three (3) years. (Note: Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.)

• Education: Successful completion of an accredited program in radiologic technology (ARRT).

• License, Certification, Registration:
  • Certified Radiologic Technologist (Washington) OR Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist License (Oregon)
  • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist Certificate within 12 months of hire OR Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist Certificate within 12 months of hire OR American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Certificate – Vascular Interventional Radiography within 12 months of hire OR American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Certificate – Cardiac Interventional Radiography within 12 months of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 1 month of hire
  • Radiologic Technologist Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 2 months of hire

Additional Requirements:

• Proof of continuing education to maintain registry.

• Performs all functions at a high level of competence without direct supervision.
• Must comply with departmental policy for 30-minute response time for after-hours call backs.
• Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two (2) years of recent EP, interventional cardiac, and/or vascular lab experience.
• Recent prior angio/cath lab experience.
• Strong organizational skills, time management, prioritization, planning, attention to detail, problem-solving, decision-making, judgment, technical skills, initiative, communication, interpersonal skills, customer relations, and organizational relations.
• Adaptability and flexibility.
• Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) – Registered Cardiac Invasive Specialist (RCIS), or Registered Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES), or The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Cardiac-Interventional Radiography (ARRT-CI) or Vascular-Interventional Radiography (ARRT-VI).
• EKG Rhythm / Dysrhythmia Recognition.
