About the Role

Arup’s West + LATAM Healthcare team is seeking an Associate, Mechanical Engineering Lead to join its multidisciplinary team in Houston. This role focuses on innovative, sustainable mechanical engineering solutions for healthcare and other building projects across the United States, with occasional global opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as project manager and mechanical lead for multidisciplinary healthcare design projects.
  • Coordinate with multiple disciplines and project managers to deliver comprehensive, coordinated design deliverables.
  • Manage project quality standards, commercial metrics, client relationships, and project delivery.
  • Potentially lead the Houston mechanical team within a wider regional discipline network, including hiring mid-level staff.
  • Supervise, mentor, and provide feedback and recognition to junior and senior team members.
  • Design mechanical systems, including airside systems, heating and cooling hydronic plants, and specialty exhaust systems.
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, technical reports, and presentation materials.
  • Incorporate sustainable design, decarbonization, resiliency, and energy-efficiency strategies into building projects.
  • Communicate with clients regarding project goals, financial performance, delivery, and future business opportunities.
  • Support business development, work-winning activities, proposals, bid submissions, and contract negotiations.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and code officials to deliver integrated projects through construction.
  • Participate in local professional associations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States.
  • At least 12 years of professional experience designing building HVAC systems, including airside and hydronic system components.
  • Significant healthcare project experience, particularly with inpatient critical care facilities such as academic medical centers, specialty care centers, and community inpatient hospitals.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE, HIH, LEED, indoor environmental quality, and NFPA codes and standards.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary projects and managing complex, large-scale client relationships.
  • Demonstrated work-winning experience, commercial foresight, and the ability to build successful client relationships.
  • Strong leadership and team-management experience, with a track record of developing others.
  • Ability to connect external stakeholders with internal disciplines.

Preferred Skills

  • LEED accreditation or WELL certification.
  • Experience with engineering analysis and energy modeling, including whole-building energy analysis, façade thermal analysis, and airflow modeling.
