Position Summary

Our Richmond, Virginia, office is growing and seeking a motivated professional interested in taking on increasing responsibilities across a variety of bridge and transportation structure projects at the local, state, and federal levels.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering project objectives for assigned bridge and structural design projects, including planning, scope, schedule and budget management, team coordination, stakeholder communication, risk management, resource management, quality assurance, and reporting. This role will also help lead and grow the bridge engineering staff in the Richmond, Virginia, office.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Staff Development

  • Provide leadership and ongoing performance management, including setting goals, offering feedback, and coaching.
  • Mentor project team members through one-on-one check-ins and project debriefs.
  • Help strengthen bridge engineering staff supporting the growth of the Richmond office and the surrounding region.
  • Potentially supervise direct reports.

Project Management and Engineering

  • Provide technical and structural engineering expertise throughout the project lifecycle, from preliminary design through final design and construction.
  • Coordinate technical resources and support high-quality project delivery.
  • Develop construction plans and associated submittal documents.
  • Prepare project management and quality management plans.
  • Identify and manage subconsultants.
  • Develop project scopes, fees, schedules, and budgets.
  • Manage risks, project progress, extra-work-order requests, and contract task proposals.
  • Prepare progress reports and review invoices.

Business Development and Client Relations

  • Support marketing activities, proposal development, go/no-go decisions, and interviews.
  • Build and maintain client relationships.
  • Communicate project status, updates, and issues to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and lead project status presentations.
  • Participate in project financial status meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • At least 10 years of bridge and structural design experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license; a Virginia PE is preferred, or the ability to obtain a Virginia PE within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Experience providing structural engineering expertise from preliminary design through construction.
  • Experience managing bridge and structural design projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and delivery.
  • Project management experience or demonstrated progression into project management responsibilities.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and client-facing skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Structural Engineering.
  • Experience working with VDOT, Virginia localities, and other Virginia agencies.
  • Experience with Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, and P3 delivery methods.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary project teams.

Work Conditions and Arrangement

  • General office work approximately 95% of the time.
  • Occasional fieldwork in varying weather conditions; lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.
  • Hybrid schedule: three days in the office and two remote days, with remote work on Wednesday and Friday.

Compensation and Relocation

  • Hourly compensation is based on experience, education, certifications, and qualifications.
  • Bonus eligibility is based on level and market alignment.
  • Relocation signing bonus available after 90 days of employment.
