Director of Engineering (Product) – USA Remote

About the Role

We are seeking a Director of Engineering (Product) to lead and scale multiple product squads at a fast-growing edtech company. You’ll report directly to the CTO and co-founder, taking ownership of the product engineering organization as Timely enters its next phase of growth, serving half a million students across 20+ states.

What You Will Do

  • Take direct ownership of multiple product squads (scheduler experience, visibility/reporting, and elementary school), managing engineers and driving delivery across all of them.
  • Be hands-on initially, contributing code, performing code reviews, and pairing with engineers (approximately a 50/50 split initially, shifting to 80/20 leadership over time).
  • Make and implement key technical architecture decisions to ensure the platform is robust and scalable for the next two years of growth.
  • Partner with Product, School Success, and other cross-functional stakeholders to define squad goals and align engineering priorities with business outcomes.
  • Ship high-value product features ahead of the March–August scheduling season, including advancing AI-powered capabilities.

Key Requirements

We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • 5+ years of engineering experience.
  • 3+ years of experience managing multiple engineering teams (6+ engineers), ideally with experience scaling teams and managing other managers.
  • Hands-on technical ability: You must be able to read, review, and write code; this is not a pure people-management role.
  • Strong backend architecture experience, with the ability to ramp up on new stacks, including proficiency in our current stack: React, TypeScript, Python, AWS, and MongoDB.
  • Experience in a startup or high-growth environment; comfortable with ambiguity and able to independently prioritize and drive work without heavy support structures.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to connect technical decisions to business outcomes and drive cross-functional alignment.
  • Ability to travel for company retreats twice a year and additional business trips (2–4 times a year).

Nice to Have

  • Experience or background in educational technology (EdTech) or related learning and teaching fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and leverage AI.

Role Details

  • Salary: $210,000–$240,000
  • Remote work policy: US-based, with a preference for East Coast hours. Company retreats twice a year, plus occasional travel to Boston or New York (2–4 additional trips per year).
  • Employment type: Full-time
  • Location: USA (remote)
  • Tech stack: React, TypeScript, Python, AWS, MongoDB
  • Equity: Competitive equity package
  • Visa sponsorship: Open to visa transfers (e.g., OPT and H-1B transfers).
