About Vir Innovations
Vir Innovations is an end-to-end product design and development company headquartered in Hyderabad, specialising in defence technology. Our work includes computer vision, robotics, fire-control systems, and IoT applications for the defence sector.
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Embedded Firmware Engineer to design, develop, and validate firmware for embedded platforms supporting robotic and defence systems, including ground-vehicle motion control, weapon-system actuation, and sensor-payload integration.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and debug embedded firmware in C/C++ for microcontrollers and embedded processors used in UGVs, RCWS, robotic-arm payloads, EO-IR systems, and IoT devices.
- Develop real-time control software for motor drives, actuators, servo and gimbal control, and motion-control systems.
- Implement communication protocols and interfaces, including CAN, RS-232/485, SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, MAVLink, and custom protocols.
- Integrate firmware with sensors, including IMUs, GPS/GNSS, encoders, LiDAR, and cameras, as well as actuators.
- Develop low-level drivers and board support packages (BSPs) for custom hardware boards.
- Develop safety-critical interlocks and fail-safe logic for weapon-system fire-control subsystems.
- Collaborate with the autonomy and navigation team on firmware integration.
- Support EO-IR payload firmware, including camera control, stabilisation, and video and image data handling.
- Develop firmware for IoT-based fire-detection and suppression systems.
- Conduct unit, integration, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and field-trial testing.
- Debug using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and JTAG/SWD debuggers.
- Prepare technical documentation, including design documents, test reports, and interface control documents (ICDs).
- Travel for field trials, integration, and testing at customer and trial sites.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics, Electrical, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 1–4 years of hands-on embedded firmware experience in the defence robotics domain.
- Strong proficiency in embedded C/C++, including bare-metal and RTOS-based development.
- Experience with 32-bit MCUs, such as ARM Cortex-M/A, STM32, TI, or NXP platforms.
- Working knowledge of RTOS platforms, such as FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or VxWorks.
- Strong understanding of communication protocols, including CAN/CANopen, UART, SPI, I2C, and Ethernet/TCP-IP.
- Experience with motor control, including BLDC/PMSM motors, servo systems, and PID control.
- Experience with wireless modules, including RF, Wi-Fi, LTE, and radio telemetry.
- Hands-on debugging experience with JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analysers.
- Familiarity with Git and embedded toolchains, including GCC, IAR, and Keil.
- Ability to interpret schematics and collaborate with hardware and PCB teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Exposure to autonomous systems, sensor fusion, and navigation stacks such as ROS/ROS2.
- Knowledge of EO-IR camera and gimbal systems, as well as video processing.
- Familiarity with functional-safety standards, including IEC 61508 and MIL-STD.
- Experience with bootloaders, firmware over-the-air (OTA) updates, and secure firmware practices.
- Exposure to weapon-system electronics and fire-control logic.
- Familiarity with IoT protocols, including MQTT, LoRa, and Zigbee.
- Prototype-to-production and field-trial experience.
