Electrical Engineer – Power Innovation (Commissioning)
Position Summary
The Electrical Engineer – Power Innovation supports the safe, reliable, and efficient commissioning and startup of power generation and energy systems. This role provides electrical engineering expertise throughout pre-commissioning, commissioning, and turnover, ensuring systems are properly tested, verified, and ready for operation.
Responsibilities
- Provide electrical engineering support across commissioning, startup, and system turnover phases.
- Lead and support electrical commissioning activities, including testing, verification, and troubleshooting of switchgear, transformers, generators, associated systems, protection relays, and control systems.
- Validate power system studies (short circuit, coordination, and arc flash) and ensure alignment with as-built conditions prior to energization.
- Execute and oversee electrical testing activities (e.g., insulation resistance, hi-pot, relay testing, and functional verification).
- Support pre-commissioning activities, including loop checks, calibration, and protection system verification.
- Coordinate and participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR), and Ready for Startup (RFSU) processes to ensure systems meet requirements for startup and turnover.
- Collaborate with Project Management, Construction, Commissioning, Controls, and Operations teams to ensure aligned execution and system readiness.
- Work in the field to support testing, troubleshooting, and issue resolution during commissioning and startup.
- Ensure compliance with National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E, IEEE standards, and company safety requirements.
- Support Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and power generation system integration, including system-level testing and performance validation.
- Develop and maintain commissioning documentation, including Inspection and Test Reports (ITRs), test records, redlines, and turnover packages.
- Identify, track, and drive resolution of punch list items prior to system handover.
- Coordinate with vendors to support installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
- Promote continuous improvement and support the development of standardized commissioning processes and tools.
- Mentor and support the development of junior engineers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology.
- 4+ years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems, or commissioning in power generation, industrial, or related industries.
- Proficiency with electrical power systems and equipment (switchgear, transformers, and generators), electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, control systems, and commissioning, testing, and startup processes.
Preferred:
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or actively pursuing one.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Experience with power generation, data centers, or Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) systems.
- Experience supporting or leading commissioning and startup activities.
- Familiarity with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) execution and turnover processes.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with power system analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, MATLAB, or similar).
- Experience with protection relay testing and electrical test equipment (e.g., Omicron, Doble, and Megger).
- Strong understanding of protection coordination and arc flash analysis.
- Strong understanding of grid integration and energy storage systems.
- Strong understanding of Distributed Control System (DCS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and electrical integration.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
This is a field-based role supporting active construction, commissioning, and startup environments. The role requires the ability to:
- Work in industrial settings and follow all required safety protocols.
- Work 12-hour, 7-days-on/7-days-off rotating shifts.
- Work in a variety of conditions, including extreme temperatures, loud areas, and confined spaces.
- Lift up to 50 lbs. and team-lift heavier loads.
- Stand, walk, climb, bend, and squat for extended periods.
- Work at elevated levels using ladders, scaffolding, or lifts with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Use hand tools and mechanical diagnostic equipment.
- Work occasional night shifts and holidays.
