Lead – Design & Estimation Engineer

Job Purpose

The Lead – Design & Estimation Engineer is responsible for preparing accurate project cost estimates and budgets. This includes understanding project requirements, analysing Bills of Quantities (BOQs), reviewing drawings, and applying appropriate pricing based on standard rates and vendor inputs. The role supports competitive and profitable cost proposals aligned with technical specifications and client expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Project Understanding and BOQ Review

• Review project scope, architectural and MEP drawings, technical specifications, and client requirements.
• Understand the functional requirements of hydrant, sprinkler, pump room, fire alarm, and other firefighting systems.
• Coordinate with the Design team to validate BOQ quantities and system design.

Cost Estimation and Budgeting

• Prepare detailed project cost estimates covering materials, labour, tools, subcontracting, transport, and overheads.
• Apply current pricing based on historical data, vendor quotations, and industry benchmarks.
• Prepare project budgets with cost-wise, item-wise, and system-wise breakups.
• Evaluate solution options and recommend cost-effective configurations.

Rate Analysis and Vendor Coordination

• Collect and analyse vendor quotations for major materials and services.
• Perform rate analysis and maintain standard pricing data for components such as pipes, valves, pumps, sprinklers, and panels.
• Collaborate with the Purchase department on current rates and vendor terms.

Proposal and Documentation

• Prepare technical and commercial proposals in response to RFQs and tenders.
• Support the Sales or Business Development team with technical documentation and costing during client discussions.
• Ensure timely submission of costing sheets, quotations, and revisions.

Revisions and Updates

• Revise estimates in response to design changes, quantity variations, or material substitutions.
• Maintain version records of BOQs and estimates for audit and reference purposes.

Handover and Coordination

• Provide finalised budgets and estimation sheets to the Project Execution team.
• Participate in project kick-off meetings to clarify cost assumptions and the basis of estimation.
• Support the project team during execution with estimation-related queries.

Key Skills Required

• Strong understanding of firefighting systems and BOQ interpretation.
• Accuracy in quantity take-offs, cost calculations, and rate analysis.
• Proficiency in Excel, estimation software, and AutoCAD.
• Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and cost awareness.
• Strong coordination skills with internal teams and vendors.

Qualifications

• Diploma or B.E. in Mechanical, Fire, or Civil Engineering.
• 2–5 years of experience in Fire Protection or MEP Estimation roles.
• Familiarity with firefighting system codes, IS standards, and local pricing trends.
