About the Role
We are seeking a Mechanical and Machining Engineer with experience in ceramic machining. In this role, you will apply your knowledge, experience, and creativity to develop solutions that support nuclear technology. The position focuses on components that serve critical functions in nuclear reactors in commercial operation, as well as reactors being designed, built, and tested.
You will contribute to the design and development of new products and lead production and prototype tooling, fixturing, and finish-machining activities.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop in-house machining capabilities and deliver high-quality precision parts to the Quality department.
- Design and machine production tooling, fixturing, and finished-part prototypes.
- Analyze customer part drawings for design for manufacturability (DFM) and recommend manufacturing optimizations.
- Review quality concerns identified during part inspections and develop solutions.
- Identify, recommend, procure, and install machine-shop equipment, ensuring that equipment is properly maintained and calibrated.
- Lead cost-optimization and cost-reduction initiatives related to machining processes.
- Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing and machining methods and techniques.
- Collaborate with external machine shops to address capacity and scheduling needs as necessary.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
- At least five years of mechanical design and machine-shop experience.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience setting up and operating advanced machining equipment.
- Experience with ceramic machining processes, including wire EDM, diamond grinding, and CNC milling.
- Knowledge of standard machine-shop manufacturing processes and setups.
- Experience operating CNC and conventional lathes and milling machines, as well as other machine-shop equipment used to manufacture high-precision parts.
- Demonstrated proficiency in CNC programming.
- Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and inspection procedures.
- Experience with precision conventional and advanced metrology systems, including CMMs and 3D imaging.
- Expertise in SolidWorks, Mastercam, or similar software.
