Sales Manager – Chemical Distribution

Job Type: Full-Time
Work Model: Field-Based / On-Site Leadership
Locations: California, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, or Utah
Candidate Requirement: Candidates must currently reside in one of these states.

Overview

We are seeking an experienced, commercially minded Sales Manager to join a growing chemical distribution company and work directly with ownership. This is a long-term, succession-focused leadership opportunity for someone who wants to move beyond traditional sales management and eventually lead the broader sales organization.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on sales leader who can lead from the front, coach sales representatives, understand margins and profitability, develop customer relationships, and drive sustainable business growth. During the first year, the Sales Manager will work closely with ownership to learn the company's customers, products, sales processes, and margin structure, with the opportunity to gradually assume broader leadership responsibilities.

Team Structure

The Sales Manager will oversee and support:

  • 5–7 Senior Sales Representatives who operate independently
  • 12 Junior Sales Representatives who require coaching, accountability, and day-to-day management

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate directly with ownership to understand the business, customers, products, and margins.
  • Manage, coach, mentor, and develop junior sales representatives.
  • Provide leadership and support to senior sales representatives while maintaining strong team credibility.
  • Drive sales activity, accountability, pipeline development, and execution across the team.
  • Monitor gross profit, margins, pricing, and overall sales profitability.
  • Review deals and pricing structures with a margin-first, commercially focused mindset.
  • Develop and maintain strong customer relationships and identify opportunities for territory growth.
  • Improve customer retention and expand existing accounts.
  • Analyze sales performance, pipeline activity, trends, and individual and team KPIs.
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, and development of sales professionals.
  • Work closely with operations, purchasing, and leadership teams to support customer and business needs.
  • Identify new markets, customers, territories, and strategic growth opportunities.
  • Help establish sales strategies and processes that support long-term organizational growth.
  • Build trust, accountability, and a high-performance culture across the sales team.
  • Gradually assume broader responsibility for the sales organization as part of the company's succession plan.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in sales, sales management, sales leadership, or sales mentorship.
  • Strong understanding of gross profit, margins, pricing, and profitability.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop customer relationships and close business.
  • Experience managing, mentoring, or supporting multiple sales representatives.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with a commercial mindset.
  • Ability to evaluate deals based on profitability as well as revenue.
  • Strong communication, leadership, coaching, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with senior leadership and ownership.
  • Must currently reside in California, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, or Utah.
  • Experience or established relationships within chemical distribution is highly preferred.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is:

  • Analytical and commercially aware
  • Humble yet confident
  • A strong communicator who naturally earns the respect of sales professionals
  • Comfortable leading from the front rather than managing only through reports
  • Customer-focused and relationship-driven
  • Skilled at coaching and developing people
  • Comfortable discussing pricing, margins, and profitability
  • Interested in building a long-term career in sales leadership
  • Motivated by team performance and business growth

Compensation & Earning Potential

  • Base Salary: $150,000 USD
  • Total Earning Potential: $150,000–$250,000+ USD
  • Additional incentives based on gross profit performance of managed sales representatives.
  • Compensation growth tied to team development and sales expansion.
  • Significant long-term opportunity to transition into broader sales leadership.

Career Opportunity

This position is designed for someone who wants to become a senior sales leader and eventually lead the company's sales organization. The successful candidate will receive direct mentorship from ownership during the first year and will progressively take on greater responsibility for sales strategy, team leadership, customer growth, profitability, hiring, and organizational development.
