STEM Facilitator
From learning how things work to designing what could work.
About SPOT
SPOT is a project-based microschool bringing personalised learning to curious learners, gifted and twice-exceptional (2E) children, homeschoolers, and learners who find traditional classrooms limiting.
At SPOT, STEM is:
- A way to understand how the world works
- A tool to experiment, build, and create
- A way to ask better questions
- A process for solving real-world problems
Role Mission
Help children think like scientists, engineers, designers, and inventors—not just learn STEM concepts. You will work closely with gifted learners who benefit from depth, complexity, and challenge, as well as 2E learners who benefit from flexibility and alternative pathways.
Key Responsibilities
Make STEM Real and Applied
- Design learning experiences around real-world problems, experiments, prototyping, simulations, design challenges, and everyday phenomena.
- Develop projects such as bridge building, sustainable mini-ecosystems, water-quality investigations, load-bearing structures, and automation solutions.
- Guide learners to explore why things work, test ideas, improve designs, and apply concepts.
Facilitate Experiments, Projects, and Inquiry
- Support children to ask questions, form hypotheses, design experiments, collect and analyse data, build prototypes, test ideas, learn from failure, and iterate.
- Facilitate the process: Question → Explore → Build → Test → Analyse → Improve → Share.
Personalise Learning for 2E and Gifted Learners
- Adapt STEM experiences to learners’ interests, learning styles, cognitive profiles, strengths, and readiness.
- Challenge gifted learners with complexity while providing 2E learners with alternative ways to access learning and demonstrate understanding.
Integrate Across SPOT Studios
- Collaborate with Maker, Business, AI/Technology, and Creative studios, as well as environment and community projects.
- Support interdisciplinary projects, such as designing a low-cost irrigation system that combines science, mathematics, engineering, technology, business, and design.
Build Skill-Based Learning Systems
- Design and track STEM skills, including scientific reasoning, experiment design, data interpretation, systems thinking, computational thinking, and collaboration.
- Contribute to skill trackers, project rubrics, learning documentation, portfolios, and reflections.
Support Academic and Independent Learning Pathways
- Support IGCSE Science/STEM, NIOS pathways, school requirements, and independent projects.
- Use a concept-first approach that moves from application and exploration to academic alignment.
Requirements
Must-Have
- Strong conceptual understanding of STEM at middle- and high-school level
- Ability to explain concepts in multiple ways
- Strong hands-on, experimental approach to learning
- Ability to design projects and inquiry-based learning experiences
- Comfort working with gifted and 2E learners
- Facilitative, rather than lecture-based, teaching style
Bonus
- Experience with project-based learning or STEM/maker education
- Experience with robotics, coding, electronics, Arduino, or microcontrollers
- Experience with 3D design, 3D printing, or engineering projects
- Experience with science fairs, Olympiads, or research
- Knowledge of environmental science, sustainability, or design thinking
Success in the First 3–6 Months
- Students ask better questions, experiment confidently, apply STEM to real situations, and iterate on their ideas.
- Gifted learners are intellectually challenged beyond the standard curriculum.
- 2E learners can access STEM through approaches that work for them.
Sample Project
Design a Tiny Smart Farm — explore plant needs, investigate water usage, calculate dimensions, prototype irrigation, use sensors and automation, analyse data, consider costs, explore sustainability, and present designs.
